An exclusive in-flight game that’s a gateway to free travel.

THE CHALLENGE
Delta recently introduced fast, free Delta Sync Wi-Fi, where SkyMiles members can log in for free Wi-Fi and engage with the brand and its partners. However, once logged in, many Members went straight to browsing and missed seeing the benefits the portal had to offer. Delta was looking for a sticky way to keep passengers engaging with the Delta Sync Wi-Fi portal and add additional value to the in-flight experience.

THE INSIGHT & IDEA
We tapped into the data, which revealed that mobile games were among the top performing onboard content. So, to keep customers engaged with Delta we created a game of our own – Sky Hopper – an 80’s nostalgia game where you hop cloud to cloud collecting as many SkyMiles facts as you can. And we made the in-flight game rewarding IRL with chances to win a $400 Delta Gift Card. The more SkyMiles facts players collected, the more entries they earned.

THE DESIGN & EXECUTION
Building a game to be played onboard the Delta Sync WI-FI portal had many considerations that needed to be accounted for. Like the size of the game and load time tolerance on board. These factors helped shape the type of game play, style and mechanics of Sky Hopper - so we used size limitations to our advantage, leaning on 80’s nostalgia and and giving it a 16-bit look. This touched on a player’s affinity towards games of a bygone era. More importantly, it made sure that Sky Hopper loaded for passengers at 30,000 feet!

When it came to gameplay, a classic, vertical scroll format was chosen where players had to tap to hop from cloud to cloud to stay in the air. The higher you go, the faster it scrolls and the harder it gets.
